The Benefits of an Incident Response Plan

Jan 15, 2024

Cybersecurity Incidents happen. When they do, will you be ready?

An incident response plan is your lifeline in the storm, guiding you through the chaos and minimizing the damage. Don't be caught off guard.

In our previous article “Holiday Parties and Security Culture” we addressed how an incident can unravel plans, leading to missed goals, and outcomes that are not very favorable.

When an incident happens, whether, as in the example of the previous article, of breaking the momentum on your healthy lifestyle goals; or a natural disaster, or a security incident - the best way to get a handle on things unraveling and losing control is to have a response plan.

A plan that will provide quick recovery, and a guide to overcoming those challenges that arise when everything is wrong and people are maybe panicking a bit, and not doing their best thinking in that moment.

Usually, organizations have some sort of plan for natural disasters like tornados, earthquakes, or hurricanes, etc. (And if yours does not, it's time to change that!)

Organizations also need to build a plan for security incidents. If they already have one, then there needs to be a periodic drill to verify the plan works and everyone knows their roles.

When security incidents occur, organizations usually operate on an “all-hands-on-deck” basis. Panic strikes, different teams struggle to evaluate the incident’s impact, and there is typically a lot of confusion in the air. Having an established, practiced plan on how to deal with the incident will help an organization bounce back quickly, and it will build confidence in the organization and the employees.

A few of the benefits of having a Incident Response Plan:

  •  A fast reaction time can reduce the operational disruption of the impacted area, whether it is physical plant, networks, servers, or applications. This way, organizations can gain more insight into their overall security.
  • No one can anticipate security incidents with certainty. Even the most secure organizations can face unexpected threats that compromise their systems. Having an incident response plan in place gives you a structured, systematic way to deal with critical situations.
  • With an incident response plan, your organization can quickly and effectively deal with any issue that arises, without disrupting other operations. An incident response plan not only saves time but also money in the long run. You can leverage your manpower, tools and resources to overcome the challenge and keep your business running smoothly.

A delayed response means that the malicious agent within an organization’s networks and systems can have a more severe impact.

A delayed response enables the agent to gather more sensitive data or infect more systems with malware, etc.

For most organizations, suffering a cyberattack is not a matter of “if” – it is a matter of “when.” Today’s hackers have more technology and are more persistent than ever before; and they have been rapidly evolving methods that allow them to circumvent even the most sophisticated preventative measures.
